Why should I opt out of Clearview AI training ?
Clearview AI creates facial recognition software used by governments, companies and various other law enforcement agencies. Essentially it is used to match photos of people with a database of over 20 billion (yes, BILLION) images collected from all across the internet. Remember that selfie you took with your cat? Yes, it’s probably there. Whenever an identity verification is needed to check it is really you, there is a high chance that Clearview is involved. This could mean the police, a tax agency, a bank, a school you want to enrol yourself or your children. Scary, right?
Clearview has a really bad reputation for not respecting the law and there have been a lot of fines issued by multiple data protection authorities in Europe in countries like the Netherlands and France. In the United States, ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union) has been involved in taking Clearview to court for their practices.
If you don’t want your facial photos being used, you need to opt out of Clearview if you happen to live in a jurisdiction where this is possible.
Otherwise, all of your online content will pile up in their databases and you could face automated decisions in the future that take those materials into consideration.
