Dropbox users found out in December 2023 that Dropbox had enabled a new setting that allowed personal data to be shared with AI companies.
Dropbox subscribers were understandably upset by this news, and they took to the internet to register their complaints. Dropbox CEO Drew Houston had to put out a statement on X apologising for any misunderstanding or miscommunication.
Drew Houston also explained that the Third Party AI toggle is turned on to give users the opportunity to use the service’s AI features, and that the file is only sent when the user interacts with Dropbox’s AI features. This means your data can only be shared when you consent to use Dropbox's AI features.
These explanations, however, have not prevented Dropbox users in various forums demanding that their data be protected from AI models.
In this Dropbox opt out guide, we'll show you how to stop Dropbox from sharing your data with third-party AI companies.
Following the news in December 2023, Dropbox now has on its website a detailed AI privacy and FAQ page to explain its AI privacy policy.
However, many Dropbox users are still adamant that they would prefer to prevent the services from sharing their data with Open AI or any other AI company out there.
If this is a bother for you too, you can follow the Dropbox AI opt out steps below and protect your privacy to the fullest.

Does this mean Dropbox no longer has my personal data?
No, following the steps above is only guaranteed to stop Dropbox from sharing your personal data with AI third-party companies for training, it doesn't mean the service no longer has your personal data.
To remove your personal data from Dropbox, you will have to delete your account and send a data deletion request to the company. Find out how to send a data deletion request to any company.
